TECHNOLOGY TO ENHANCE CULTURE

The Culture and Science and Technology Ministries have agreed on collaboration to adopt new technologies to enhance Thai art and culture tourism.
Over the next two years the two ministries will work together to enhance access to Thai art and culture by using technologies researched and developed by the National Electronics and Computer Technology Centre (Nectec)'s Information and Mobile Application (IMA) programme.
The Culture Ministry will provide expertise on Thai cultural matters, while the Science and Technology Ministry will provide the technologies.
IMA programme manager Virach Sornlertlamvanich said the project would focus on six tasks: history strategy, archeology and museums, local wisdom, Thai classical dance and music, the national archive and contemporary art and culture.
IMA will provide support in the form of six pilot projects, including museum management with radio frequency identification (RFID), management of an Ayutthaya tourism map, a cultural-tourism assistant system, a chintz-design programme and a Thai Khon drama database.
"In each pilot project, we will work with universities. For example, for the Thai Khon drama database, we will work with Chulalongkorn University to research and develop digital information for Khon. And, to enhance local wisdom, Nectec is working with Rajamangala University of Technology Lanna to develop a local chintz-designing program to help people to create and design chintz and to develop a whole Thai-chintz database," Virach said.
He said IMA currently had 60 research and development projects. Some are still in prototype stage and others have progressed further. Normally, IMA receives Bt20 million per year for research and development.
